When does a babysitting app, bone marrow broth, a web-based tool to assist rape victims, and an animated short = $20,000?

When it’s the pitch competition of the fourth-annual Female Entrepreneur Summit. Contempo Communications, the publisher of CBC magazine, gave cash prizes to the top four placers at our first-ever pitch competition. Those ladies grace CBC’s cover this month. As a fellow female entrepreneur, that day ranks in my top five proudest and “in awe” moments. I sat next to Deborah Spake, the dean of Kent State University’s College of Business; Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss, the founders of Rent the Runway; and Gloria Ware of JumpStart, as we systematically filled out our judging sheets and watched the top 10 ladies compete for these prizes.

Each of the judges asked great questions of our competitors, gave tremendous advice and feedback, and — I am sure — inspired all of the competitors and many more in the room. If we can help these women launch, what better thank-you can be expected? As seasoned entrepreneurs, educators, supporters, and “philanthropists,” what better way than to give back to our growing entrepreneur base in Northeast Ohio.

To learn more about the winners of the pitch competition, see pages 46-54.

As we look toward 2016 for CBC, our ninth-annual Connectors Choice Awards is March 2. The sixth-annual Expys ceremony is April 20. Our Amplify Series, in its 10th year, will kick off April 27. And the Northeast Ohio Adoption Services fundraiser will again be at Browns Stadium in the fall, followed by FES in October.

We continue to receive your generous feedback and support, and we thank you for that. Have a wonderful holiday season and happy New Year!
