Pantone colors of the year 2016: Will you wear them?

By Traci McBride

When I write an article every January about the chosen color of the year (and this year, for the first time, there are two), I usually like to wear the colors chosen.

In past years we’ve seen emerald green (2013), true red (2002), and radiant orchid (2014),  and just last year we enjoyed marsala. When I wear the new color of the year it’s not to be a follower, but it’s just a fun, modern way to stay relevant in style, incorporating the new colors in my own way, either with just a touch or in a bolder way.

Full disclosure – I don’t usually wear pale pinks and blues. I just don’t reach for pastels of any color. But as an image consultant, it isn’t about me — it’s always about you! So with that mindset, I would like to give you tips and ideas on how to incorporate rose quartz and serenity.

Rose quartz communicates compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, rose quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months.” … “Serenity (is) weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky about us. Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times.” — Leatrice Eisman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute

  • Pantone2Pantone3Wear a serenity blouse with your personal complementary power colors in a scarf.
  • Mix the color of the year into the accessories and colors you love and wear.
  • Pantone4Wear in the details of your grooming products.
  • Pantone5Remember, you can wear deeper tones of the color of the year if it works into your wardrobe better. This silk scarf is one I would wear in a heartbeat.
  • Pantone6Could be a great excuse to treat yourself to a new purse in rose quartz or serenity blue.
  • Men can easily tweak their ties, pocket squares, and shirt wardrobes to perk it up with a modern look.  This serenity blue looks handsome with navy and charcoal, medium grey, and black.
