Can Santa save my career?

By Kris McGuigan

This time of year most professionals are more than ready for a little rest and relaxation. After trudging through nearly 12 months of deliverables and deadlines, proposals and projects, visions of sugarplums begin to dance in our heads. But don’t go hanging your hat and hunkering down in front of the fireplace just yet.

The holiday season presents endless opportunities to advance your career and grow your network, so grab your jingle and let’s start to mingle!

Here are just a few ways to make a Christmas Connection:

Holiday parties: Forget the water cooler — forge relationships over eggnog and figgy pudding. December offers an endless supply of social gatherings, open lunch blocks, and company holiday parties. Get out and join in the fun to network your way into the New Year.

As you hit the holiday hustle, don’t simply stand in the corner chatting with the same ol’ office buddies. Instead, challenge yourself to make two to three meaningful connections at each event you attend. If joining a colleague for coffee, step into the conversation with a desired takeaway (referral, new business idea, accountability partner, etc.). Networking with a purpose helps to ensure you walk away with more than a fruitcake.

Holiday cards: ’Tis the season to pass along holiday salutations and well wishes to those you hold dear. This year send holiday greetings with a goal in mind. Use this seasonal tradition to reconnect with key stakeholders — a gift for your favorite vendor, referral partner, boss or top-tier clients.

mcguigan-santaAs you’re making your list and checking it twice, consider those clients or contacts who did not generate the level of business expected. Suggest a follow-up meeting after the first of the year to reassess the relationship and provide them with up-to-date information on service offerings, training, etc. Find out how you can serve them better in 2017.

Holiday spirit: Music and mistletoe have even the stingiest of scrooges believing in magic. The holidays leave most people with an attitude of gratitude. Take hold of that holiday spirit and submit any outstanding requests you may have been holding back on.

Make the ask for a promotion, a second look in 2017, or a new project. Reach out to an industry leader and ask for a moment of his/her time. Invite a new prospect to lunch. Spread holiday cheer and making your desires clear. You never know when a wish might be granted.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Step out this holiday season and lay the groundwork for a prosperous New Year.
