Corporate Event of the Year (Planning Budget <25K) — Business Expo (Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce, May 12, 700 Beta Banquet and Conference Center)

The Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted more than 100 exhibitors and 600 attendees May 12 at its 22nd-annual Business Expo. HRCC opted for a sports theme (with Cavaliers colors) in celebration of Cleveland’s winning sports teams. Long-time member Notre Dame College partnered to create a “Business Workout” course comprised of five interactive booths at which attendees could test their business’ fitness and learn about opportunities to improve: Warm Up (get feedback on elevator pitches); Design Your Program (learn to use data mining for marketing); Select the Right Equipment (learn to choose and use appropriate technology and troubleshoot IT problems); Sculpt and Tone (hone PowerPoint skills); and Cool Down (a quiet recharge break for more productive networking). Keynote speaker Robin Sacks, an avid baseball fan, wove the sports metaphor into her presentation to help attendees “prep for the big game” and “put their best plays in motion.” She also spoke about realistic goal setting and how to think about one’s self-concept for the longer term. HRCC also partnered with local media more than usual, including newspapers and magazines with a business readership, radio stations that catered to its demographic in different ways, and other small-business support organizations who promote successfully on social media to draw a similar crowd to networking events.

Runners-up: Flavors of Northeast Ohio (American Liver Foundation, Oct. 17, Westin); Savvy Women Succeed (National Association of Women Business Owners/Red Key Network, Oct. 28, Parkside Church); Thursday Therapy-Boo Bash (Aable Rents, Oct. 27, Aable Rents); WISE Within Speed Mentoring Roundtable (Women in Sports and Events, Jan. 20, Skylight Financial Group).
